ST ANDREW, Jamaica — A Smith & Wesson M&P pistol was recovered early Friday morning during a police operation along Waltham Park Road, near the Chinese Cemetery, thanks to the vigilance of patrolling officers.
Reports are that around 3:09 a.m., police on routine patrol observed two suspicious men within the cemetery grounds. Upon noticing the police, the men fled the area, abandoning a brown leather bag.
A search of the bag led to the discovery of the Smith & Wesson pistol, along with two magazines. The weapon was seized and is now undergoing forensic processing as part of an ongoing investigation.
Police commended the officers involved, stating that the recovery was a result of their “alertness, diligence and tactical response.” Law enforcement continues its efforts to reduce the circulation of illegal firearms across Jamaica.
In a statement, the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) urged the public to assist in the fight against crime:
“Illegal firearms and those who traffic them pose a clear and present danger to public safety. We call on all Jamaicans to stand united with us to rid our streets of guns, ammunition and the individuals who are bent on disturbing the peace, maiming lives and destroying the future of our country.”
Investigations are ongoing as police seek to identify and locate the men who fled the scene.
