St. Elizabeth, Jamaica – A 28-year-old labourer from Braes River district has been charged with multiple offences after being caught breaking into a house armed with a firearm in the early hours of Thursday, in Mount Plymouth district.
According to police reports, around 1:00 a.m., a homeowner was awakened by a strange noise inside his home. Upon investigating, he was confronted by Shawn Thompson, who was armed with a firearm. A physical struggle ensued between the homeowner and Thompson. The homeowner managed to raise an alarm, prompting nearby relatives to rush to his aid. Together, they disarmed and detained Thompson until the police arrived.
The firearm was handed over to the authorities, and Thompson was taken into custody. Following a question-and-answer session conducted in the presence of his attorney, he was formally charged with burglary, possession of a prohibited weapon, and unauthorised possession of ammunition.
The quick response of the homeowner and his relatives likely averted a more dangerous outcome, with no serious injuries reported.
The St. Elizabeth Police Division is continuing their investigation into the incident. Residents of Mount Plymouth have praised the homeowner’s bravery and expressed relief that no one was harmed. Authorities are urging the public to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
