KINGSTON, Jamaica — Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness has reassured citizens that Jamaica’s safety remains a top priority for his administration, even as significant geopolitical upheaval unfolds across the wider Caribbean region.
Speaking at the National Day of Prayer service in Portmore, St. Catherine, Holness addressed concerns linked to recent United States military action in Venezuela, which saw the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in early January. The U.S. strikes, part of Operation Absolute Resolve, included air and military operations designed to apprehend Maduro and have sent waves of uncertainty throughout the hemisphere.
Amid these developments, Holness stressed the importance of keeping Jamaica insulated from conflicts that do not directly affect the country. He reiterated his government’s commitment to national security and reiterated that Jamaicans can be confident that the island’s stability will be maintained.
The U.S. military involvement in Venezuela has drawn attention from governments and international bodies alike, with many expressing concern over potential implications for regional peace and stability.
Holness also highlighted Jamaica’s leadership role within CARICOM, affirming that the nation will continue to engage in diplomatic efforts and contribute constructively to security discussions in the Caribbean. He stressed that participation in CARICOM’s Bureau reinforces Jamaica’s voice on matters of regional concern and ensures that the nation remains engaged in collective efforts towards peace.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a time of heightened global uncertainty and underscore his administration’s emphasis on safeguarding Jamaica’s interests as regional dynamics evolve.
