Prime Minister Dr Andrew Holness says reducing violence and strengthening Jamaica’s security institutions are central government priorities, with benefits extending beyond public safety to business growth and everyday freedoms.
Speaking at the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica’s 32nd Hall of Fame induction ceremony on October 29, Holness argued that lower crime allows communities and businesses to reclaim opportunities lost to insecurity.
“Every reduction in crime gives something back to the economy. It gives back working hours, commercial opportunities, public spaces and a measure of personal freedom,” he said.
The ceremony, held at The Jamaica Pegasus hotel in New Kingston, honoured Guardsman Group Founder and Executive Chairman Kenneth “Kenny” Benjamin.
Holness said security policy also serves economic and social objectives, making it an important area for cooperation between the Government and private sector.
He stressed that safety should be available throughout Jamaica, rather than depend on an individual’s ability to pay for protective measures.
“Our national ambition must be a Jamaica in which safety is not a privilege that people purchase behind a gate or a grill. It must be a public good available in every community,” he said.
The Prime Minister added that business owners should feel confident about investing and children should be able to travel to school without fear.
Turning to Benjamin’s induction, Holness praised the businessman’s more than four decades of contribution to Jamaican enterprise and his role in developing a professional private security industry.
He noted that Guardsman Group’s operations in eight other Caribbean countries and territories demonstrate the ability of Jamaican businesses to expand beyond the domestic market.
Holness also recognised Benjamin’s investment in staff training and development, saying his influence extends beyond the companies he has established.
“His legacy is reflected not only in the businesses he has built but in the people he has invested in and helped to grow,” he said.
The Prime Minister encouraged the next generation of entrepreneurs to follow Benjamin’s example by building businesses that also contribute to national development.
Accepting the honour, Benjamin thanked the PSOJ and credited his family and the Guardsman Group team for supporting his journey.
“Jamaica has given me so much and it has been a privilege to serve and contribute to our country,” he said.
