Kingston, Jamaica – The much-anticipated leadership debate between Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness and Opposition Leader Mark Golding kicked off Thursday night with fireworks as questions regarding the JLP government’s alleged treatment of oversight bodies set the stage.
Veteran journalist Dionne Jackson-Miller asked Holness if his administration had been undermining public oversight and civil society bodies. The Prime Minister fired back, saying:
“There’s absolutely no attempt by my administration, and indeed myself, to undermine any oversight body.”
Holness highlighted moves like strengthening the Integrity Commission and placing the Office of the Political Ombudsman under the Electoral Commission of Jamaica as examples of his government bolstering oversight institutions.
Golding didn’t hold back, accusing the JLP of fostering hostility toward oversight bodies, including the Integrity Commission. He further claimed this pattern was motivated by investigations into some parliamentarians for illicit enrichment, pointing to the Prime Minister taking the Commission to court over a report on his finances last year.
Journalists Jackson-Miller and Giovanni Dennis posed questions live, while social media queries were also fielded by moderators Archibald Gordon of TVJ and Amoy Harriott of CVM TV.
The debate marked yet another tense moment in Jamaica’s election season as both leaders sparred over transparency, accountability, and the integrity of the nation’s watchdog institutions.
