HIV-Positive Man Sentenced After Using His Blood to Attack Hospital Workers

An HIV-positive man in North Carolina has been sentenced after admitting he used his own blood as a weapon against hospital staff who were trying to treat him.

According to Law & Crime, Kameron Gilchrist pleaded guilty to two counts of assault with a deadly weapon after pulling an IV from his arm and intentionally spraying his blood into the eyes of two hospital employees. The incident occurred in March at UNC Rex Hospital in Raleigh, where he was being treated for diabetic complications.

Gilchrist, who was 25 at the time, was sentenced to 91 days in jail. Court records show he received credit for time already served, meaning the sentence has been completed.

Charging documents state that Gilchrist “did unlawfully and willfully assault” the workers with a bodily fluid containing HIV, which prosecutors described as a “deadly weapon.” Police say the situation escalated during active medical care when he removed the IV and aimed his blood at the victims’ eyes.

The two hospital workers, one male and one female, reportedly suffered irritation and were exposed to HIV. Authorities have not confirmed whether either employee contracted the virus.

Gilchrist was initially charged with felony assault on emergency personnel and was not immediately taken into custody due to ongoing medical and psychiatric treatment.
