MONTEGO BAY, St James — A government employee charged in connection with the seizure of more than 20 pounds of cocaine at Sangster International Airport has been granted bail, while his co-accused remains before the court.
Trevon Clayton, who is employed to the St Ann Municipal Corporation, was offered $1 million bail with up to three sureties when he appeared in the St James Parish Court on Wednesday. The decision followed arguments presented by his attorney, Henry McCurdy.
As part of his bail conditions, Clayton must surrender all travel documents, report to a specified police station on designated days, and is subject to a stop order preventing him from leaving the country.
His co-accused, Latoya Hemmings of the Trelawny Municipal Corporation, had her $750,000 bail extended. Her case is set to continue on March 4.
Both individuals are charged under the Dangerous Drugs Act following their arrest on January 16. Investigators allege they were intercepted during security screening while preparing to board a flight bound for New York.
According to police reports, searches of their luggage led to the discovery of cocaine weighing approximately 20.5 pounds. Clayton was also taken to hospital after reportedly admitting he had swallowed drug pellets. Authorities say he later expelled 82 pellets containing cocaine.
Law enforcement further reported that a subsequent search at Clayton’s residence in Trelawny resulted in the discovery of an additional pellet, said to contain about one ounce of the drug.
