School administrators have been directed to allow students to wear jackets and other warm clothing, even if the items are not part of official uniforms, as cooler temperatures persist across the country.
The guidance was issued in a bulletin released late Wednesday by Chief Education Officer Terry-Ann Thomas Gayle, who called for flexibility in dress code enforcement to protect student comfort and health.
The move follows reports that a St Catherine institution recently seized jackets that did not match approved school branding, prompting wider concern about how uniform policies are being applied during the cold spell.
The Ministry stated that students should be permitted to wear appropriate jackets and similar outerwear to stay warm while at school. It noted that exposure to low temperatures can interfere with students’ concentration and general well-being.
Administrators were also reminded that some students have health issues that may be aggravated by cold weather and should be monitored carefully to ensure their needs are met.
In addition to relaxed jacket rules, schools are encouraged to support student warmth by providing hot drinks or soup during lunch periods where feasible. The bulletin also recommends granting more frequent bathroom breaks as part of measures to keep students comfortable throughout the school day.
