Government Commits to Further Enhancements as 100 New JUTC Buses Arrive in Kingston

Kingston. Jamaica: 100 New JUTC Buses Arrive – On Monday, July 15, Jamaica received a significant boost to its public transportation system with the arrival of 100 compressed natural gas (CNG) buses, marking a major enhancement to the Jamaica Urban Transit Company Limited (JUTC) fleet and service delivery.

These new buses, valued at approximately US$20 million, were transported to the Portmore Depot after clearing customs at Kingston Wharves. They join an additional 70 buses introduced since 2023, bringing the total new additions to the public transport system to 170.

Minister of Science, Energy, Telecommunications and Transport, Hon. Daryl Vaz, who oversaw the arrival at Kingston Wharves, highlighted the transformative impact these buses will have on Jamaica’s transportation sector.

“With these 100 buses, we aim to reduce waiting times in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region to 45 minutes. These are equipped with smart technology that will enhance commuter experience and assist the JUTC in efficient bus management and tracking,” Minister Vaz affirmed.

He also announced that these buses represent the first phase of a larger initiative to introduce 300 new buses into public transport. Minister Vaz assured the public that plans for the remaining 200 buses are already underway, following commitments made by Minister of Finance and the Public Service, Dr. the Hon. Nigel Clarke.

In addition to the fleet expansion, Minister Vaz highlighted the JUTC’s strategic plan to introduce a mobile application (app) designed to empower commuters with real-time information about bus locations, capacity, and estimated arrival times.

Minister Clarke, also present at the event, underscored the significance of this investment, pointing to Jamaica’s robust macroeconomic standing as a key enabler for such infrastructure improvements.

“Our strong macroeconomic environment has allowed the Government to purchase these 100 buses without external financing. This underscores our commitment to improving public services and enhancing the quality of life for all Jamaicans,” Minister Clarke emphasized.

He concluded by assuring the public of continued efforts to leverage macroeconomic stability for further enhancements in public service delivery and infrastructure development.
