Golf legend Tiger Woods was taken into custody in Jupiter, Florida, after a motor vehicle crash that occurred on a residential roadway, according to law enforcement officials.
Authorities report that the incident took place at approximately 2:00 p.m. when a pickup truck was attempting to enter a driveway along a two-lane street. Investigators say Woods was travelling at a high rate of speed in a Range Rover when his vehicle struck the pickup, resulting in the SUV overturning onto its side.
Woods reportedly exited the damaged vehicle through a passenger-side window shortly before deputies arrived on the scene. Officers noted that he appeared lethargic and possibly impaired. However, an alcohol breath test administered at the scene returned a reading of 0.00 percent.
During a subsequent briefing, the sheriff indicated that impairment was suspected to be linked to medication rather than alcohol. Woods was arrested and transported to a police station, where he declined to provide a urine sample. He was later charged with driving under the influence and refusal to submit to testing.
Officials confirmed that neither Woods nor the driver of the pickup sustained injuries in the crash.
Law enforcement also noted that Woods referenced previous surgeries when questioned, though he was said to have failed standard field sobriety tests conducted at the scene.
The arrest marks another traffic-related incident involving Woods. In 2017, he was detained in the same Florida town on suspicion of impaired driving, later stating that the episode was due to an adverse reaction to prescribed medication.
Woods was also involved in a serious rollover crash in Los Angeles County in 2021, which resulted in significant injuries. At the time, authorities reported no indication of impairment.
