Authorities in Clarendon are probing the tragic death of a young child following a suspected drowning at her residence in Rocky Point on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as five-year-old Rackeema Williams. Police reports indicate that the child is believed to have fallen into an uncovered pit located on the family’s property.
Investigators say the incident came to light after the child’s mother realized she could not find her inside the house. She reportedly began searching the yard and observed that a stone normally placed over a manhole cover had been moved.
Further checks of the area led to the discovery of the child’s body inside the pit. The mother is said to have removed her daughter and sought urgent medical assistance.
The child was transported to hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
