Five Dead in Mass Shooting at Manhattan Skyscraper — NYPD Officer Among Victims

Manhattan, New York (McKoy’s News) — A terrifying scene unfolded in Midtown Manhattan on Monday, July 29, when a gunman opened fire inside a high-rise office building, leaving five people dead, including an NYPD officer and the suspected shooter, in what authorities are calling one of the most brazen acts of violence in recent city history.

According to reports, the tragedy struck shortly before 6:30 p.m. at 345 Park Avenue, a skyscraper that houses prominent firms including the NFL headquarters and Blackstone. The assailant, identified as Shane Devon Tamura, 27, arrived in a black BMW, armed with an M4-style rifle and dressed in camouflage and body armor.

Tamura entered the lobby of the building and opened fire, immediately gunning down Officer Didarul Islam, who was working as a security guard on location. Islam, a decorated officer and father of two with another child on the way, died protecting others from harm.

Within minutes, the gunman shot and killed three more individuals — including a female lobby worker, a building security officer, and a corporate employee. A fifth person was rushed to hospital in critical condition.

The shooter then made his way to the 33rd floor, where another victim was fatally shot before the gunman turned the weapon on himself.

Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have confirmed that Tamura had overstayed a concealed carry permit from Nevada and had a history of mental health issues, including involuntary psychiatric holds in Las Vegas in 2022 and 2024.

A handwritten note recovered at the scene referenced CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy) and the NFL, suggesting that Tamura may have been targeting the league’s offices, though officials believe he accessed the wrong floor.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, “The attacker acted alone. There is no further threat to the public.” She praised Officer Islam’s actions, calling him a hero “who gave his life so others could live.”

Mayor Eric Adams offered condolences to the victims’ families and announced that flags will be flown at half-mast citywide.

Gun Control Debate Rekindled
The massacre has reignited national debate over firearm regulations and mental health screening. Advocacy groups are again calling for tighter restrictions, especially related to access to assault-style weapons.

New York City had seen a decline in gun violence in recent months, but this mass shooting has shaken public confidence in urban safety.
