A fire tore through the Jamaica Urban Transit Company’s (JUTC) Rockfort depot in East Kingston on Tuesday afternoon, destroying 24 decommissioned buses.
The blaze reportedly started shortly after 3:00 p.m., prompting an emergency response from the Jamaica Fire Brigade. Fire units from the Rollington Town, York Park, and Trench Town stations were dispatched to the scene, with four fire trucks involved in the operation.
Firefighters were able to bring the flames under control, after which cooling-down activities were carried out. Investigations have since been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. Information received indicated that the buses destroyed were more than 15 years old and were no longer in active service.
Although officials at the depot declined to comment immediately following the fire, the JUTC later issued a statement confirming that its operational fleet and key facilities were not affected.
The company further noted that there was no damage to active buses, storage areas, or critical infrastructure, and confirmed that operations at the Rockfort depot continued without disruption.
