PORT ANTONIO, Jamaica — A group of 50 Haitian nationals who entered the island illegally have been repatriated to Haiti, Jamaican authorities confirmed. The return operation took place on Monday night from the Coast Guard Base at Boundbrook Wharf in Port Antonio, Portland.
The group, which included 35 men, six women, five boys, and four girls, departed at 8:31 p.m. aboard a Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Coast Guard vessel, following coordinated efforts by immigration officials and law enforcement agencies.
Observer Online understands that one of the women, who was seven months pregnant, had arrived just Sunday and required emergency surgery. Several other individuals in the group had been staying in St Mary for an extended period after previously entering the island illegally.
The authorities say the repatriation was conducted in accordance with immigration protocols and international guidelines, with due consideration given to the medical and humanitarian needs of the individuals involved.
This marks the latest in a series of repatriation efforts by Jamaican authorities amid a growing influx of Haitian migrants, driven by ongoing political and economic instability in the French-speaking nation.
