The Fantastic Warriors, last year’s runner-up in the KPMG Squash League was upbeat about their chances this year after winning their matches comprehensively in the first two rounds. They are gearing up to get their first hold of the coveted trophy but will have to clear a couple of hurdles to stay on course for the big prize.
Fantastic Warriors recorded a straight sets three-love win over the Avengers recently to book their place in the quarter-final. Captain Stewart Maxwell was confident that his team was ready to go all the way. “Once you’re in a competition that is the goal so I would say yes, I believe we have a chance.”
Scores in that match were Stewart Maxsell vs Ethan Williams 21/14, 21/15, 21/17; Nabeel Jawad vs Aqueme Johnson 21/17, 21/16, 21/15 and Yasir Anwad vs Varenya Singh 21/14, 21/13, 21/19. The matches are normally best of five with each game going to 21 but such was the dominance of the Fantastic Warriors players that all the matches ended in straight sets.
Maxwell credits the team’s fitness for their on-court performance to date. The team also include Stephen Dear, the reserve player. “Fitness is coming. All our guys are working hard, preparing, both individually and when we have time we hit together and we do our own fitness training.”
A look at the results for the other matches in the round show that Swift Swingers blanked Racket Science three games to nil; Saints defeated the Juniors by a three nil score line as well and first time entrant KPMG Squash Rascals winning their first game in the league but lost one game to two against the Racketeers.
The final set of matches in the preliminary round will be played on Tuesday at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston with matches staring at 6:00 pm. The KPMG team will be on court to face the Campionites. Both teams will be looking for their first win of a match outright in the league. The Campionites team are also first time entrants in the league.
