HANOVER, Jamaica — The music fraternity is mourning the tragic death of veteran deejay Roger Walker, widely known as ‘Jaggy D’, who was fatally shot in Hopewell, Hanover, shortly after midday on Monday.
Reports indicate that Walker, 57, was socializing with friends at a well-known hangout in the community when a lone gunman approached and opened fire. The attack reportedly occurred around 1:30 p.m., and the entertainer died at the scene.
An alleged eyewitness recounted that the assailant came from behind before carrying out the shooting and fleeing the area. Walker reportedly collapsed face down and did not survive the injuries.
Jaggy D was regarded as part of a wave of emerging deejays who gained prominence across western Jamaica during the late 1980s. His contribution to the local music scene earned him recognition among peers and supporters alike.
Hopewell-based social activist Craig Oates shared that Walker was originally from Kingston but relocated to Hanover during childhood when his family moved to the area. He spent much of his early life in Hopewell before later dividing his time between Hanover and Kingston as his music career progressed.
According to Oates, the deejay had recently returned to Hopewell for a performance at the Unity of the Beach event, which took place on Sunday night. He noted that Walker had been spending more time in Kingston in recent years while working to further establish himself in the entertainment industry.
Up to press time, attempts to obtain an official statement from the Hanover police regarding the incident were unsuccessful. Investigations into the fatal shooting are ongoing.
