Kasai Province, DRC – Health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo have officially declared a new Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in the central province of Kasai, marking the nation’s 16th recorded outbreak of the deadly virus.
According to the Ministry of Health, at least 28 people have been infected, with 15 confirmed deaths so far, including four healthcare workers. The first identified victim, a 34-year-old pregnant woman, died after suffering multiple organ failure.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed it is working closely with Congolese health officials to contain the spread. Emergency response teams have been deployed to the area, with efforts focused on contact tracing, surveillance, and vaccination campaigns.
Health officials confirmed that Ervebo Ebola vaccines are already being administered to high-risk contacts and frontline medical staff.
“This outbreak is a tragedy, but thanks to experience gained from previous Ebola crises, we are better prepared than ever before,” said a senior WHO representative.
The Ebola virus is known for its high fatality rate and spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected persons. Kasai residents have been urged to remain vigilant, avoid unsafe burials, and report suspected cases immediately.
This outbreak comes just three years after a smaller flare-up in Équateur Province in 2022, which was quickly contained.
International health experts warn that while the outbreak is serious, swift response and vaccination campaigns could prevent it from escalating into a prolonged epidemic.
