A motorist is counting his blessings following a dramatic collision involving an ambulance that left his vehicle overturned in St James on Tuesday.
The driver of a panel van reported that he was travelling towards Freeport in Montego Bay from the Bogue section of Alice Eldemire Drive when the incident occurred. As he approached the intersection near the Freeport Police Station, he said he proceeded through a green traffic light.
According to the motorist, he then observed an ambulance approaching from the opposite direction at high speed. Despite attempting to avoid a collision, the emergency vehicle struck the rear of the van.
The impact caused the van to overturn, leaving the driver shaken but alive. He indicated that he did everything possible to prevent the crash.
A police officer at the scene raised concerns about the behaviour of some emergency vehicle operators, warning that the use of a siren does not automatically grant the right of way.
The officer explained that sirens are intended to alert other road users and request passage, but drivers of emergency vehicles are still required to exercise caution and observe traffic signals.
