President of Mico University College, Dr. Asburn Pinnock, has renewed calls for teacher preparation to be placed at the forefront of Jamaica’s recovery and long-term development efforts.
In a contribution to the institution’s Digital Magazine, Dr. Pinnock emphasized that strengthening the nation’s teaching corps is critical to safeguarding the country against future economic, environmental and social challenges. He argued that true sustainability depends less on physical infrastructure and more on the development of human capital.
The Mico president noted that periods of crisis often expose a country’s weaknesses, making strategic investment in teacher education essential during times of disruption. According to Dr. Pinnock, preparing educators to respond effectively in uncertain circumstances should be treated as a national priority rather than an afterthought.
He further highlighted the connection between high-quality teacher training and improved student performance, workforce preparedness and social stability. In his view, the standard of the nation’s educators and the strength of the institutions that prepare them play a decisive role in shaping economic growth and public confidence.
Dr. Pinnock is also advocating for broader national dialogue on the importance of teacher education, maintaining that sustained conversations are necessary to position the sector as a key pillar in Jamaica’s future development strategy.
