DR Congo Ebola Outbreak Sparks Regional Alert as Death Toll Reaches 65

A growing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has raised concerns among regional health officials after authorities confirmed dozens of deaths and hundreds of suspected infections in the country’s northeastern Ituri province.

Health officials reported that 65 people have died while 246 suspected Ebola cases are under investigation. The outbreak is mainly affecting the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones, though additional suspected infections have also been identified in Bunia, the provincial capital.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) warned that the Ebola outbreak could extend beyond national borders because of frequent movement between communities in the region. Officials highlighted neighboring Uganda and South Sudan as countries facing elevated risk due to ongoing cross-border travel and security challenges.

Concerns have also intensified following early laboratory findings indicating the virus involved may differ from the widely known Zaire Ebola strain. Health experts say this development could affect the performance of existing vaccines designed to target previous Ebola variants.

Authorities are continuing surveillance, testing, and containment efforts as health teams work to limit further spread of the virus in affected communities.
