St Andrew, Jamaica: Prime Minister Andrew Holness has demanded the full force of the law be applied against a man accused of deliberately setting fire to seven homes in Bellrock, St. Andrew, displacing approximately 30 people, including more than 10 children.
The community, located within Holness’s West Central St. Andrew constituency, is now reeling from the aftermath of this devastating act of arson.
Residents allege that the arsonist acted out of anger following the breakdown of an intimate relationship with one of the fire victims. The attack has shattered the peace of a community that has been known for its close-knit, family-like atmosphere. Many residents had invested significant effort in upgrading their homes from wooden structures to more durable concrete buildings, making the destruction all the more heartbreaking.
During his visit to Bellrock on Tuesday, Holness expressed pride in the community’s spirit and resilience but lamented that the reckless actions of one individual had ruined the lives of eight families. He vowed to ensure that the man responsible would face justice. Superintendent Damion Manderson, the commanding officer of the St. Andrew South Police Division, accompanied the Prime Minister during the visit and confirmed that the incident stemmed from a domestic dispute that escalated out of control.
The arson has left 30 people without shelter, with extensive damage to their homes and belongings, including vital items such as children’s school supplies. While no lives were lost, the emotional and financial toll on the affected families is significant. The government has already provided some initial relief through the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, offering bedding and other essential items. However, Holness assured the residents that this was a temporary measure and pledged to explore further ways to help rebuild their homes promptly.
Superintendent Manderson stated that efforts to locate the suspect are ongoing. He is considered a person of interest not only for this incident but also for other crimes in different divisions. Authorities have urged the individual to surrender.
Residents recounted the chaos of the night when the fire broke out. One woman described how the flames spread rapidly, leaving them with little time to react. According to her account, the suspect had sent a threatening message to his former partner’s mother, indicating his intent to burn down the house. Unfortunately, this warning was not taken seriously until it was too late. Despite the terrifying ordeal, everyone managed to escape the blaze, but the loss of homes and possessions has left a deep scar on the community.
