Dominique Brown, a beloved Disney influencer and co-creator of Black Girl Disney, tragically passed away last week at the age of 34 after reportedly suffering a severe allergic reaction at a holiday brand event in Los Angeles. The incident occurred on Thursday evening during a gathering hosted by BoxLunch, a pop culture merchandise retailer, at Vibiana, a historic downtown LA venue.
Emergency services were called to the scene when Brown began showing signs of a severe allergic reaction. Witnesses reported that the DJ interrupted the event’s music to urgently ask if anyone had an EpiPen, as confirmed by NBC News. Despite efforts to assist her, Brown succumbed to the reaction later that evening.
BoxLunch expressed devastation over the loss, calling Brown a “beloved member” of their BoxLunch Collective brand ambassador program. “Our hearts go out to her family and friends, and we will do everything we can to support them,” the company said, also offering grief counseling services to staff and ambassadors.
Dominique Brown was a cherished figure in the Disney fan community. As the co-creator of Black Girl Disney, a space for Black Disney influencers and enthusiasts, she fostered inclusivity in a predominantly white niche. Known for her infectious joy and dedication to Disney culture, Brown had cultivated over 21,000 followers on her personal Instagram account and another 20,000 on Black Girl Disney.
Her final Instagram post featured her excitement over a Winnie the Pooh hat and a cardigan from BoxLunch, encouraging her audience to embrace Disney’s magic.
After her passing, heartfelt tributes poured in from fans, creators, and public figures. Dominique’s brother, Patrick Ramos, commented on her final Instagram post, expressing gratitude to her online community. “Disney did bring her joy, but it was unparalleled that she found a community who loved her and Disney as much as she did,” he wrote.
Fellow creator Monika Jade took to Threads, saying she felt “disappointed, confused, heartbroken, and ANGRY,” while actress Anika Noni Rose, who voiced Princess Tiana in Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, honored Brown’s legacy as a “beautiful spirit.” Rose also promoted a Change.org petition calling for mandatory life-saving allergy protocols at food establishments, which garnered over 18,000 signatures by Monday.
Both BoxLunch and Vibiana have launched independent investigations into the circumstances surrounding Brown’s death. A spokesperson for Vibiana offered condolences, stating they are fully committed to understanding the events that led to the tragedy.
Brown’s passing has sparked renewed calls for improved allergy safety measures at public events. Advocates emphasize the need for staff training, access to life-saving epinephrine devices, and stricter allergen protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Brown’s death is a profound loss for the Disney community and beyond, but her legacy of joy, inclusion, and magic will continue to inspire.
