New Amsterdam, Guyana — 26-year-old Debbie Blacks tragically lost her life after allegedly being tricked into drinking poison by her girlfriend, 22-year-old Belinda Fraser, on October 1.
The incident occurred at Fraser’s residence in the Mayor and Town Council Housing Scheme in New Amsterdam, Berbice, around 2:30 p.m.
Blacks, a resident of Tuckber Park, had been in a relationship with Fraser for some time. However, reports suggest that Fraser had developed feelings for another woman and was looking for a way to end her relationship with Blacks. The couple reportedly had a heated argument that day, which led to Fraser proposing a deadly pact.
According to police, Fraser poured a poisonous substance into two champagne glasses and allegedly told Blacks, “Let’s drink poison, and we’ll be together after death.” Unaware of Fraser’s deceit, Blacks drank the poison, while Fraser only pretended to consume it. She spat out her sip and drank milk to counteract the poison’s effects.
Both women were rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, but Blacks’ condition deteriorated rapidly. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to the poison on October 2. Before her death, she gave a statement to police and her family, revealing Fraser’s role in the incident. Her final words were recorded on video by her relatives.
Police confirmed that the poison was extremely potent, making it impossible to save Blacks. Fraser remains in critical condition after ingesting a small amount of the substance.
A full investigation is underway, and Fraser may face charges once her condition stabilizes. The tragic event has sent shockwaves through the New Amsterdam community.
