Kingston, Jamaica – Dante Brooks, the son of popular dancehall artiste Mavado, has been freed after the Court of Appeal on Friday overturned his conviction for the 2018 murder of Lorenzo Thomas. His co-accused, Andre Hines, was also released following the ruling.
Brooks and Hines were previously sentenced to life in prison in 2021 after being found guilty of murder, arson, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. Their convictions stemmed from the brutal killing of Thomas in the Cassava Piece community in St. Andrew.
The appellate court’s decision to overturn their convictions comes after their legal team successfully challenged the ruling, arguing that there were significant weaknesses in the prosecution’s case. Details on the court’s reasoning for overturning the verdict have not yet been fully disclosed.
Brooks, who was just 18 years old at the time of sentencing, was ordered to serve 22 years before being eligible for parole. Hines was also sentenced to life imprisonment with similar parole conditions. Their release marks a significant turn in a case that has attracted widespread attention due to Mavado’s high-profile status in the dancehall industry.
Following the ruling, Mavado, whose real name is David Brooks, has not yet issued a public statement. However, fans and supporters have been reacting strongly to the news across social media platforms.
The prosecution has not indicated whether they will seek further legal action following the Court of Appeal’s decision.
