Bounty Killer Tribute at Reggae Sumfest: The city of Montego Bay is buzzing with anticipation as Dancehall fans gear up for the highly anticipated tribute to Bounty Killer at the upcoming staging of Reggae Sumfest, set to take place from July 14-20.
This year’s event promises to be a landmark celebration of one of Dancehall’s most influential figures.
Reggae Sumfest, renowned for its vibrant celebration of Jamaican music, announced in December that Bounty Killer would be the 2024 recipient of a tribute, following in the footsteps of legendary Dancehall producers Dave Kelly and King Jammy, who were honored in 2022 and 2023 respectively at the festival’s Catherine Hall home.
Bounty Killer, born Rodney Price, has left an indelible mark on the Dancehall scene since his rise in the 1990s.
Known for his powerful lyricism, intricate rhyming schemes, and hardcore tracks, he has become a cornerstone of the genre. His altruism in the industry is equally notable, having kickstarted the careers of numerous elite artists and molded their careers to national prominence.
Fans from across the world are expected to gather for this tribute, celebrating the legacy of the Poor People Governor, who has not only defined a genre but has also uplifted countless others within the industry. The tribute is set to be a fitting acknowledgment of Bounty Killer’s enduring impact on the world of Dancehall music.
Often hailed as the grand patriarch of Dancehall, Bounty Killer’s influence extends through his Alliance collective, which includes notable names like Vybz Kartel, Mavado, Wayne Marshall, Bling Dawg, Aidonia, and Busy Signal.
His nurturing role has also impacted artists such as Elephant Man and the Scare Dem Crew, solidifying his legacy as a mentor and innovator in the genre.
The tribute to Bounty Killer at Reggae Sumfest will be a historic moment, aligning him with icons Dave Kelly and King Jammy. In 2022, Bounty Killer, alongside Beenie Man, Cham, Wayne Wonder, Spragga Benz, Frisco Kid, and Mr. Easy, headlined the Madhouse Tribute to Dave Kelly, celebrating the iconic producer’s influential beats from the 1990s.
Last year, Reggae Sumfest honored Lloyd “King Jammy” James, the king of computerized, digital Reggae/Dancehall music. The 2023 tribute featured performances by Dancehall veterans Lieutenant Stitchie, Admiral Bailey, Pinchers, Chaka Demus, Leroy Gibbons, Bunny General, and Chuck Turner, paying homage to the sound system selector and producer who shaped their careers in the 1980s.
