Dancehall Artist Squash Accepts Plea Deal in US Federal Gun Case

USA (McKoy’s News) — In a stunning twist just days before his federal gun trial was set to begin, dancehall artiste Squash, whose real name is Andrae Maurice Whittaker, has opted to plead guilty in a U.S. courtroom — avoiding trial and leaving fans and legal watchers shocked.

The St James native was staring down serious federal charges: being an alien in possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of a machine gun, following a traffic stop in February 2025 that turned up two Glock pistols and several loaded magazines.

Squash had previously geared up for a courtroom battle, with his legal team filing motions to suppress the evidence, arguing the firearms were obtained through an illegal search. Prosecutors, meanwhile, had fought back, attempting to introduce text messages, videos from Squash’s phone, and even lyrics from his music as part of the case.

A key court ruling on that evidence was scheduled for Tuesday, but in a sensational legal development, that hearing was cancelled on Monday. Why? Because attorneys confirmed that Squash would be changing his plea to guilty.

With that, the jury trial, originally set for September 2, has now been called off. A new hearing is scheduled for September 3, when the dancehall deejay is expected to enter his guilty plea before a federal judge.

Sources say Squash had until August 26 to strike a deal or risk going to trial — and facing up to 10 years in prison on each charge. If prosecutors had proven three or more prior convictions, the Jamaican artiste could’ve been slapped with a mandatory minimum of 15 years per count.

So far, details of the plea agreement remain sealed, and it’s unclear what sentence Squash will face.

This isn’t the first time Squash has found himself in hot water on U.S. soil. Back in 2023, another traffic stop led to him being detained by ICE, and two firearms were also seized in that case — eerily similar to the February 2025 incident.

Federal authorities maintain that Squash entered the U.S. illegally in 2021, and he still faces deportation proceedings stemming from that earlier arrest.

As the legal saga continues, one thing is clear — Squash’s days in America may be numbered, and his future as a free man hangs in the balance.
