Popular dancehall artist Marlon Plunkett, better known as Kiprich, was taken into custody on Monday, February 10, and formally charged with Use of Audio and Audiovisual Communication to Promote Criminal Activity.
According to police reports, the charge is linked to a song recorded and circulated by Kiprich that allegedly endorses gang violence and pays tribute to members of the One Order Gang. Authorities say the track gained significant traction across multiple media platforms, prompting an official investigation.
Law enforcement officials emphasize that the crackdown is part of a broader effort to curb the influence of violent lyrics in music, which they argue can contribute to criminal behavior. “The dissemination of content that glorifies organized crime and violence will not be tolerated,” a senior police officer stated.
Kiprich, 45, is scheduled to appear in the St. Catherine Parish Court later this month, where he will face formal proceedings related to the charge.
The arrest has sparked mixed reactions within the dancehall community, with some defending the artist’s right to creative expression, while others stress the importance of responsible messaging in music.
This is a developing story. More updates to follow as the case progresses.
