Convict Escapes Custody in Downtown Kingston, Sentenced to 18 Years in Absenc

Kingston, Jamaica — A manhunt is underway for Anthony Williams, 22, also known as “Pops,” who escaped custody in downtown Kingston earlier today.

Williams was sentenced in absentia to 18 years in prison after being found guilty of illegal possession of a firearm and assault at common law by Justice Calys Wiltshire in Gun Court.

Williams was already serving time for prior convictions, including over 12 years for illegal possession of a firearm and 14 years for wounding with intent, stemming from incidents in April 2022. The circumstances surrounding his escape have raised serious concerns about security protocols within the correctional system.

Williams’ attorney, Kymberli Whittaker, is urging him to surrender, stating, “It’s in his best interest to turn himself in.” Meanwhile, police have ramped up efforts to locate Williams and are appealing to the public for assistance in the search.
