A fatal shooting at an apartment complex in New Kingston on Friday night has left a 61-year-old Colombian man dead, prompting an investigation into possible ties to international criminal networks.
The deceased has been identified as Julian Lopez, who was reportedly killed around 9:40 p.m. at Kensington Court in New Kingston. Law enforcement sources indicate that the incident may be connected to organised crime activities extending beyond Jamaica’s borders, although investigations remain ongoing.
Preliminary information suggests Lopez was at the apartment complex—described as having a single point of entry and exit—when a vehicle arrived on the premises. He reportedly went downstairs and spoke briefly with someone inside the vehicle before a gunman approached and opened fire.
The attacker discharged multiple rounds, and while unofficial reports suggest the victim may have been struck numerous times, police have not confirmed the exact number of gunshot wounds. The assailant fled the scene on foot, leaving Lopez dead at the location.
Authorities later disclosed that Lopez had been scheduled to leave the island the following day, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding his presence in Jamaica.
Investigators searching the apartment—believed to have been rented through Airbnb—reportedly uncovered evidence pointing to significant financial transactions. This discovery has led to suspicions that the victim may have been involved in illicit operations, possibly linked to drug trafficking.
A senior police source noted that the case is being treated as transnational in nature, based on early findings. However, officials stress that the investigation is still at an early stage.
