Grand Cayman — The high seas got even hotter this week as the Cayman Islands Coast Guard (CICG) reeled in a massive drug haul — 1,500 pounds of marijuana — from a suspicious canoe intercepted in local waters early Thursday morning.
Acting on what seemed to be illicit maritime activity, eagle-eyed CICG officers, backed up by the police helicopter, swooped in on the vessel, which had four men aboard.
The suspected traffickers, who reportedly tried to outrun the authorities, were no match for the CICG’s swift response. The men were quickly detained and slapped with charges including illegal entry, possession of controlled drugs, and importation of controlled drugs.
The seized vessel and the hefty stash of ganja were turned over to the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) for further investigation, as authorities continue their crackdown on drug smuggling operations across the region.
Police investigations are ongoing.
