In the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl, individuals involved in clean-up operations are being advised to take necessary precautions. This advisory comes from Richard Thompson, Acting Director General of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), in a recent interview with JIS News.
Thompson highlighted the frequent occurrence of injuries during debris removal. He noted that while there were no widespread reports of flooding, some areas did experience localized flooding. “We want to remind everyone that water-borne diseases can be a concern,” he stated. “If you need to enter floodwaters, it’s essential to wear protective gear like winter boots to ensure your safety and the safety of your family.”
He also emphasized the importance of vigilance for residents in flood-prone or low-lying areas. “Following a weather system with significant rainfall, the ground becomes highly saturated, which increases the risk of flooding with any subsequent rainfall,” Thompson explained.
Thompson urged the public to stay informed by following updates from the Meteorological Service of Jamaica and to act on the advisories provided by authorities to ensure safety during the clean-up process.
