Thirty-two-year-old Panif Broomfield, otherwise called ‘Chang’, a construction worker of Effortville in May Pen, Clarendon, has finally been cornered by the law after forensic evidence tied him to a brazen 2019 robbery and gun battle in May Pen.
Broomfield, who has been on the police’s radar and even featured on the JCF’s ‘Wanted Wednesdays’, is now slapped with a long rap sheet — Robbery with Aggravation, two counts of Shooting with Intent, Illegal Possession of Firearm, and Illegal Possession of Ammunition.
Reports are that around 9:10 p.m. on Thursday, February 21, 2019, a taxi operator was pounced upon along Manchester Avenue in May Pen. The attackers, including Broomfield, reportedly forced the driver into the back of his Toyota Probox before attempting to make their getaway.
But their plans were interrupted when an off-duty police officer confronted them. What followed was a fiery gun battle. In the chaos, the taxi operator managed to escape by jumping from the moving vehicle.
The robbers, however, managed to flee. The getaway car was later discovered abandoned along Chapelton Road riddled with bullet holes. Police processed the crime scene, recovering spent casings and blood samples.
Shortly after, cops were alerted that Broomfield turned up at hospital with gunshot wounds. He told doctors he was an innocent passerby caught in crossfire while walking along the road.
But forensic testing later proved otherwise — linking his DNA and blood evidence directly to the abandoned Probox and the crime scene.
Since the incident, Broomfield remained one of Clarendon’s most wanted men for over six years.
Finally, on Tuesday, September 30, 2025, ‘Chang’ surrendered to police in the presence of his attorney. He was interviewed on Thursday, October 2 and formally charged.
