Cherry Tree Lane, Clarendon — The relatives of 22-year-old Jamar Farquharson, who was shot and killed during a police operation on Monday, are gearing up to stage a protest in May Pen, denouncing what they describe as an extrajudicial killing.
Police reported that Farquharson was fatally shot after allegedly pulling a firearm on lawmen who were executing a search warrant at a house along Cherry Tree Lane. According to the police, a gun was recovered from the young man following the confrontation.
However, Farquharson’s family has flatly rejected that account. They insist the slain man was unarmed and cooperative when officers arrived. To support their claims, they circulated a short video online which they say shows the moment Jamar opened the door to police.
The footage — now widely shared on social media — depicts a man hurrying to open a door, raising both hands above his head before stepping outside and briefly out of view. Seconds later, officers can be seen moving him aside as two policemen enter the dwelling. The video ends before any further encounter is shown.
“This was an unjust killing,” a family spokesperson told reporters. “Jamar did not have a gun. He surrendered, and they still shot him.”
Community members in Cherry Tree Lane say they are standing with the bereaved family. Plans are reportedly underway for a peaceful protest in May Pen later this week, demanding a transparent probe into the incident.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Farquharson’s death, while police maintain that their officers acted in self-defense.
The fatal shooting has stirred tensions in the parish, with residents urging calm as investigations continue
