KINGSTON, Jamaica — Canadian authorities have charged a 40-year-old man in connection with the theft of hurricane relief supplies valued in the millions, which were reportedly intended for shipment to Jamaica following the impact of Hurricane Melissa.
The accused, Varinder Dhillon of Brampton, Ontario, faces multiple charges, including breaking and entering, theft over CA$5,000, possession of property obtained by crime, and several alleged breaches of probation.
According to the Peel Regional Police, the charges were announced Thursday following an investigation led by its Commercial Auto Crime Bureau.
Investigators reported that on December 3, 2025, Dhillon allegedly entered a secured storage facility near Derry Road East and Goreway Drive in Mississauga and removed a trailer carrying a shipping container loaded with relief items.
Police said the stolen supplies included clothing and non-perishable goods that were being prepared for transport to Jamaica to support hurricane recovery efforts.
Authorities stated that the investigation led to the recovery of more than CA$1 million worth of stolen property. Police said the recovered items were returned to their owner and later shipped to Kingston for distribution as intended.
Law enforcement also disclosed that Dhillon was allegedly on probation at the time of the incident for similar offences and had been prohibited from driving indefinitely.
A search warrant was executed at a residence in Brampton on March 11, resulting in Dhillon’s arrest. He remains in police custody as the matter proceeds before the courts.
