The bodies of a Guyanese couple who disappeared while swimming at Unity Beach have been recovered, bringing a tragic end to a search effort that spanned several days.
Police confirmed that the bodies of 20-year-old Lyodisa “Loyda” Waldron, who was pregnant, and her fiancé, 33-year-old Andri Francis, were found on Tuesday. Both were residents of Victoria Village on the East Coast of Demerara.
According to reports, the couple was among a group of people visiting Unity Beach on Sunday afternoon when Waldron reportedly drifted farther into the Atlantic Ocean and began calling for help.
Francis, a special constable and father of two, entered the water in an attempt to rescue his fiancée. However, both were reportedly overcome by strong ocean currents and disappeared beneath the surface.
A joint search-and-rescue operation involving officers from the Mahaica Police Station and members of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard was launched shortly after the incident. Despite extensive efforts, rescuers were unable to locate the couple on Monday.
Their bodies were eventually recovered on Tuesday, police said.
Authorities have not released further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the recovery.
Police investigations into the incident remain ongoing.
