Darliston, Westmoreland – A major police operation in Darliston on Thursday, August 15, ended in gunfire and bloodshed, with one man dead and a massive haul of illegal ammunition and firearms seized by lawmen.
Reports reaching McKoy’s News are that members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force moved in on a suspected arms smuggling ring after receiving intelligence about a plot to import illegal guns and ammo through Jamaica’s ports.
During the operation, one man — believed to be heavily involved in the illicit trade — was intercepted. But instead of surrendering, he reportedly opened fire on the police.
The police responded with gunfire, hitting the gunman. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.
Cops recovered a high-powered rifle, two pistols, and a staggering 1,100+ rounds of assorted ammunition. Investigators also seized several electronic devices and documents in follow-up operations. These items will be sent for forensic examination.
Police believe this bust is part of a much larger network, and say they are actively following strong leads both locally and overseas.
The Police High Command is warning criminals that attacking the police will be met with decisive force and is urging suspects to surrender peacefully when challenged.
