ST JAMES, Jamaica — Classes have been suspended at Bickersteth Primary and Infant School in St James after burglars broke into the institution, stealing computers and causing extensive damage.
Principal Major Robert Gordon said windows and security grilles were ripped out, while the principal’s, secretary’s and guidance counsellor’s offices were ransacked.
He said the school has been broken into five times in about seven years, but described Thursday’s incident as the worst.
The damage has left parts of the building exposed to the elements, prompting the temporary closure while urgent repairs are carried out.
Gordon said the school is hoping to reopen by Monday and is appealing to the Ministry of Education for assistance in strengthening security.
