Officials are urging Bermudians to prepare as Hurricane Erin, a large Category 3 storm with winds of 105 mph, moves closer to the island.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) says Erin is 650 miles southwest of Bermuda and will grow in size as it tracks northward. Though the storm’s center is expected to pass between Bermuda and the U.S. East Coast, it will bring dangerous surf, rip currents, and strong winds to the region.
Acting National Security Minister Jaché Adams warned against complacency and advised all preparations be completed by Thursday morning. He emphasized staying out of the ocean, calling it a serious risk to life.
While Bermuda remains open for business, the Orange Route ferry will be suspended, and several cruise ships, including Carnival Sunshine and Norwegian Aqua, have canceled stops. Flights are unaffected.
Energy Minister Alexa Lightbourne encouraged residents to conserve power ahead of the storm, especially those relying on backup systems.
The Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) will meet Wednesday to assess the situation.
“The government is ready. Now we ask the public to be ready too,” said Adams.
