Montego Bay, Jamaica (McKoy’s News) – Barnett Street Lockup Closed Temporarily: The Barnett Street lockup which recently housed over fifty prisoners have been ordered closed by the St James Health Department.
This was made known to the Minister of National Security on Sunday, January 4th following a tour of the compound and the facility.
The Minister was informed that recently the cell block broke out with a serious case of insect infestation and several of the inmates were diagnosed with Scabies, an infestation where tiny mites called sarcoptes scabiei set up shop in the outer layer of the human skin which leads to itching and rashes on the skin.
This was brought to the attention of the St James Health Department and after carrying out investigations, the Station was served with a notice informing them to close down the entire cell block.
Meanwhile, our news team conducted an interview with Lennox Wallace, Acting Parish Manager at the Health Department and we were told by him that in late January, a team from the Department carried out an investigation at the facility and based on the findings the Department was forced to issue the police an order of closure.
Also, he stated that at the end of this week they will be revisiting the facility to see if the work being done is satisfactory in an aim to reopen the cell block.
