An attempted jailbreak orchestrated by prisoners at the Oracabessa lock-up in St. Mary on Friday night was foiled by the quick actions of the police.
Reports indicate that around 7:30 p.m., officers on cell guard duties at the station heard strange sounds coming from a section of the cell blocks and rushed to investigate.
They arrived just in time to witness several prisoners attempting to cut away a ventilation grill at the rear of the cell to make their escape.
The police officers raised an alarm and received assistance from other officers, but the prisoners still resisted and attempted to escape.
They were eventually overpowered by a large team of police officers who managed to restrain them. As a result, six out of the nine prisoners housed in the cell were relocated to the lock-ups at Annotto Bay and Islington stations.
