In a spectacular event held on Friday, March 14th, at the state-of-the-art Bioprist Institute of Medical Sciences in Montego Bay, local leaders, law enforcement officials, and members of the business community came together to celebrate progress and honor excellence in both security and medical education. Hosted by prominent businessman Mr. Lachu Ramchandani, the evening highlighted the collaborative efforts of various sectors working toward a safer and more prosperous Jamaica.
The venue itself, the newly established Bioprist Institute, was a fitting backdrop for the occasion. Founder and CEO of Indus Pharma Group, Dr. Guna S. Mupuri, has pioneered a cutting-edge medical school that is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of innovation in healthcare education in the Caribbean. The institute boasts some of the most advanced medical equipment in the region, including the Anatomage imaging device—one of only two in Jamaica and the Caribbean—which allows surgeons to virtually perform operations via touch imaging before actual procedures. This, coupled with shorter graduation periods and scholarships valued at up to $80,020 USD, positions Bioprist as a leader in molding the next generation of medical professionals.
As guests marveled at the futuristic equipment and the modern ambiance of the institute, the evening’s focus shifted to law enforcement. Special guest Commissioner of Police, Dr. Kevin Blake, delivered a rousing keynote address. Known for his strategic approach to crime-fighting, Dr. Blake emphasized the critical relationship between the police and citizens in reducing crime. “Policing is about managing behavior,” he said. “Plan, strategize, and execute. This ensures that the probability of achieving results is higher.” He concluded by reassuring the audience, “We will not relent, and we will not give up our country to those who want to do harm.”
The event also honored three newly promoted Senior Superintendents of Police: Eron Samuels, Carlos Russell, and Othneil Dobson. Collectively known as the “Dream Team,” these officers have made a significant impact in Area 1, which covers the parishes of Trelawny, St. James, Westmoreland, and Hanover. Under their leadership, the region has seen an impressive 54.8% reduction in murders. Their dedication was recognized by the Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon, who praised their efforts as a testament to their strategic investments of time and energy. “We are reaping the benefits of the Dream Team’s hard work, and we all appreciate what they have done,” he remarked.
Host Mr. Ramchandani, who has a deep passion for fostering partnerships between the business community and law enforcement, reiterated the importance of mentorship, grooming, and motivation for Jamaica’s future leaders. He stressed that while crime is largely driven by unemployment, a symbiotic relationship between business leaders and law enforcement can play a pivotal role in maintaining order. “Education is not just academics but skills and mentorship,” he noted, adding that success is contingent on “the willingness and mindset to work together to improve themselves and Jamaica.”
The event attracted a notable guest list, including Custos Rotulorum for St. James, Honourable Conrad H. Pitkin, CD, JP, who highlighted that St. James is the only parish that offers a Police Benevolent Foundation under the auspices of the Custos’ office. Other distinguished attendees included former President of the Jamaica Hotel and Tourism Association, Honourable Godfrey Dyer, OJ, CD, JP; former Senior Medical Officer of Health at the Cornwall Regional Hospital, Dr. Delroy Fray; General Surgeon Consultant, Dr. Jeffery East; Deputy Mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Dwight Crawford; Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. Warren Clarke; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Glen Mills; Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr. Andrew Nish; and Head of Operations at Bioprist Institute of Medical Sciences, Mr. Prasad Dasari, among other notable figures.
With everyone in attendance being feted in grand style, guests expressed admiration for the Bioprist Institute’s potential to revolutionize medical education in the region. Several described the evening as both purposeful and successful. The common word on everyone’s lips was: “Impressive!” With groundbreaking facilities, a strong commitment to mentorship, and a robust collaboration between law enforcement and the business community, the event showcased the power of partnerships in building a safer and healthier Jamaica.
