Health officials in the United States and France have confirmed that two passengers repatriated from a cruise ship affected by a hantavirus outbreak have tested positive for the disease after returning to their home countries.
According to the French health ministry, a French woman who arrived in Paris is currently in isolation as her condition continues to worsen. Authorities said 22 individuals who came into contact with her have already been identified and traced.
In the United States, health officials confirmed that a second American passenger aboard the repatriation flight also displayed mild symptoms linked to the virus.
Both American nationals were reportedly transported home in specialized biocontainment units as a precautionary measure.
The outbreak has been linked to the MV Hondius, a cruise vessel now docked in Spain’s Canary Islands. More than 90 passengers from the ship are currently being repatriated.
The incident has already claimed the lives of three passengers, including a Dutch couple and a German woman. Officials confirmed that two of the deceased tested positive for hantavirus.
