Jamaica Crime News, St Ann: The St Ann police have confirmed that a man who is said to be mentally challenged, was shot and killed after he reportedly attacked members of a police patrol with a machete on Sunday morning, June 3, 2018.
The deceased man has been identified as, Winston Grant, 30-year old unemployed of Clysdale District in Alexandria, St Ann.
The police have reported that, Grant who is said to be of unsound mind for some time now, got involved in an argument with his sister while at their family house, in Clysdale District on Sunday morning about 9:00 a.m.
The sister filed a report with the police and requested that they reprimand her brother. The police drove to the community and while the officers were in the process of alighting from the service vehicle, Grant reportedly attacked the vehicle and started to chop sections of the outside with the machete.
It is further stated that, Grant then attacked one of the police officers and use the machete to allegedly chop him to the regions of his leg. He then chopped at the police officer’s upper body at what point the officer’s colleague pulled his service revolver and fired one shot hitting the insane man to his upper body.
Both the wounded officer and the mentally challenged man were transported to the St Ann’s Bay hospital where the officer was treated and admitted, and the mentally challenged man pronounced dead.
A team from the Independent Commission of Investigation are now carrying out a Probe into this latest fatal shooting.
