St Catherine, Jamaica – The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched yet another probe following the fatal shooting of a man in Old Harbour, St Catherine, early Monday morning – the fourth police fatal shooting within just 48 hours.
Reports are that around 3:45 a.m., a team of lawmen, acting on intelligence, carried out an operation in Gordonwood district, Church Pen, Old Harbour.
The cops reportedly cordoned off a section of the community, then proceeded to the back of a premises, where they knocked on a door. A woman answered, and the police began to clear the house.
During the search, officers say they heard noises coming from another section of the dwelling. Upon making checks, they reportedly saw a man at a bathroom door with a firearm in hand.
According to investigators, the police issued commands, but the man allegedly pointed the gun at them. The lawmen say they took evasive action and opened fire, hitting the man.
He was rushed to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A .38 revolver with two rounds of ammunition was allegedly seized at the scene.
The deceased remains unidentified up to news time.
Meanwhile, this latest incident brings the number of police fatal shootings over the past two days to four. On Sunday, a double fatal shooting occurred in St Catherine, while earlier today, another man was shot and killed by police in Hungry Town, Mannings Hill, St Andrew.
So far, 230 people have been killed by the security forces since the start of the year, with 20 of those fatalities recorded in September alone.
INDECOM is continuing its investigations.
