Kingston, Jamaica – A 23-year-old man was shot and killed during an alleged confrontation with the police early Wednesday morning on Content Avenue, located off Waltham Park Road in St Andrew. An illegal firearm was also reportedly seized during the operation.
The deceased has been identified as Shacqol Pounal, otherwise known as ‘Track Star’, a warehouse attendant and alleged high-ranking member of a notorious gang operating in the area.
According to initial reports, around 5:35 a.m., law enforcement officers were carrying out an intelligence-led operation on Content Avenue when the incident occurred. During the operation, police say they came under fire and returned gunfire, fatally wounding Pounal.
A 9mm pistol loaded with three rounds of ammunition was allegedly recovered from the scene.
Law enforcement officials disclosed that Pounal had long been on their radar and was suspected of involvement in several violent crimes, including multiple murders and shootings within the St Andrew South and Central police divisions.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched a probe into the fatal shooting, as is standard procedure in such incidents involving the police.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
