A police operation in Craig Town, St. Andrew, ended in a fatal shooting on Thursday, resulting in the death of a man identified by investigators as a key figure in criminal activity in the area.
The deceased has been named as Rasheed Lyons, also known as “Guess,” whom the police described as the alleged head of the One Ten gang operating within the community.
According to reports from law enforcement, officers were executing search warrants during a series of targeted raids when they entered a premises at 6½ John Street. Upon entry, Lyons was reportedly inside the location, holding a mobile phone while keeping one hand out of view.
Police said they identified themselves and issued multiple instructions for Lyons to raise his hands. He allegedly ignored the commands, placed the phone down, and continued to conceal one hand. Investigators reported that Lyons later brought his hidden arm forward, produced a firearm, and fired at the officers.
The police responded, discharging their weapons and striking Lyons. He reportedly fell while still holding the firearm. The weapon was seized, and Lyons was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Official figures indicate that, since the beginning of the year, 19 people have been fatally shot during encounters involving members of the security forces.
