Jamaica Crime News, St James: Our news team has learned that all three police officers attached to the Barnett Street police station in Montego Bay St James who were accused to be involved over a week ago are now behind bars.
We have also been informed that the police Corporal who tendered in a sick leave at the station several days ago turned himself over to his colleagues on the weekend. It has also been disclosed that the other two officers who were being held under house arrest at the Freeport Barracks have been transported to lockup.
One of the accused cops is now said to be in lockup in the parish of Trelawny while the other two are said to be in lockup in the parish of St Ann.
The two Police Constables were taken into custody by detectives attached to the Major Organized Crime Unit on Thursday, June 14th, on suspicion of Breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act, while the police corporal who was also alleged to be part of the corruption scheme fled the scene when detectives swoop down on his colleagues.
Reports are that, the two Constables and the Corporal drove to a Chinese operated store located at the intersection of Cornaldi Avenue and Hart Street in Montego Bay where they allegedly informed the operator that they discovered irregularities at the establishment which is a breach of the law. The cops also allegedly demanded money from the Chinese owners as payment to avoid prosecuting and taking them to court.
It is further alleged that a sum of the money was paid over to the three Police Officers and arrangements made to pay the remainder at a later date. The operator then made enquires to determine if the officers were acting within the law and later decided to make an official report to the police.
An official report was then made to the office of the Major Organized Crime and a sting operation set up to nab the alleged corrupt cops. On Thursday afternoon the three officers reportedly drove back to the Chinese operated establishment, with an expectation to collect the remainder of the money, but upon reaching the location, they were accosted by detectives attached to the Major Organized Crime Unit (MOCU).
The two accused Constables were taken into custody while the police Corporal, who was waiting inside the service vehicle, saw what was taking place and he jumped from the vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
