The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Jamaica is reporting a sharp increase in demand for HIV testing following recent social media discussions about HIV in Jamaica.
AHF Jamaica said 79 people visited its Kingston Medical Centre in a single day to get tested for HIV, signalling heightened public interest in knowing their status.
The organisation said some of the online discussions referenced figures suggesting that approximately 30,000 people are living with HIV in Jamaica. However, AHF said the Ministry of Health and Wellness estimates that approximately 28,000 people are living with HIV, while national HIV prevalence is estimated at 1.1 per cent.
AHF welcomed the increase in testing but urged Jamaicans not to allow figures circulating on social media to create fear or stigma around people living with HIV.
The organisation is encouraging sexually active Jamaicans to make HIV testing part of their routine sexual healthcare, rather than waiting until concerns arise from social media discussions or a possible exposure.
AHF also stressed the importance of HIV prevention, including consistent and correct condom use, regular testing and access to appropriate HIV and STI prevention and treatment services.
