KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona, have signed an agreement to strengthen agricultural research, expand training and improve the detection of diseases that can spread from animals to people.
The memorandum of understanding, signed on Wednesday, November 4, at the ministry’s Kingston offices, gives the two institutions a formal framework for working together. It pairs UWI Mona’s researchers and facilities with the ministry’s field resources, data and agricultural networks. The partnership aims to improve disease surveillance and diagnostic capacity, strengthen veterinary public health and address barriers to agricultural productivity.
Agriculture and Fisheries Minister Floyd Green said projects already under way with UWI Mona helped prompt the agreement. He said closer collaboration could help the sector respond to climate change and develop practical solutions to productivity challenges.
Green also said he hoped the partnership would encourage more students to pursue agriculture degrees. He said the ministry and the university could work together to show students the business opportunities available in agriculture.
UWI Mona Principal and Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Densil Williams said access to ministry data would support the university’s research and help it produce findings that can inform policy and address problems facing the sector.
The agreement supports Jamaica’s Vision 2030 development priorities and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
