The 6-year-old girl who fought back against her would-be kidnapper by sinking her teeth into the creep is being hailed as a hero by Florida police for her quick thinking in the face of danger.
Ah’lyric was honored for her bravery during a ceremony attended by her family and officers of the Miami Metro Police Department on Tuesday.
She was gifted a new bike, a doll, and her own police badge — with the Ah’lyric revealing that she plans on becoming a police officer when she’s older, WPLG reported.
Her father was in tears, saying he was just grateful his little girl was okay and still here, the outlet reported.
Ah’lyric was outside with her siblings in the courtyard of their apartment complex on Thursday when they noticed a white Range Rover parked near them while playing.
Her siblings went inside, leaving the six-year-old alone on the staircase, where the alleged kidnapper crept up behind the unsuspecting child.
He then grabbed her by the arm and picked her up, but Ah’lyric chomped down on his arm, causing the man to drop her.
The victim told police that the alleged kidnapper, identified later as Leonardo Venegas, 32, slapped her before he fled from the scene.
CCTV footage captured Vanegas’s White Range Rover scoping out the apartment before he allegedly made his attempt at snatching the small child, according to the police report.
Vanegas has been charged with attempted kidnapping and child abuse, according to the police report.
“This is a case that has us extremely worried, concerned, something that’s not very common,” Miami Police Capt. Freddie Cruz told NBC South Florida.
“Luckily we were able to apprehend this individual.”
Cruz said his department is looking into whether there have been additional victims.
“If you’re going to be playing outside, which is a wonderful thing, please, try to play in groups, try to have an adult present, some sort of supervision, know where your children or if you’re a guardian, know where they are at,” Cruz said.
